5 Fictional Characters You Most Identify With

We’re still a little behind on this, especially because we missed last week’s, so we’re just gonna do the one from last week, and hopefully we’ll get it right next week… But please be patient if we don’t.

So, last week’s 5 Fandom Friday was 5 fictional character you most identify with. Here we go:

1. Hermione Granger

It’s kind of a no-brainer, this one. She’s an amazing character (in the books even more than in the movies), and not just because she’s the girl with two guys as best friends. And not just because she’s usually the one who saves Harry, although that is part of the reason why we love her so much. No, the reason why we identify so much with her is because she’s never been about looks. She doesn’t really care what people think (still working on that part, but we are on our way there), and she does her best to help her friends. She’s smart (this may sound arrogant – I hope it doesn’t because it’s not supposed to – but Frodo is definitely smart, and I’d like to think that I am, too), and she uses her brains to solve problems. She’s the one who’s prepared for everything, which is something I usually try to be, and she’s an amazing friend, sticking by Harry’s and Ron’s side through all of it, and I do believe that we are that kind of friends (minus the magic, sadly), at least to each other. Also, the hair.

2. Charlie Bradbury

Charlie is an amazingly complex, fun character. She’s geeky (check), she doesn’t run away from a challenge (check, I think), she uses her brains to solve her and other people’s problems (check), and she’s just awesome. But mostly because she’s such a geek, and a big Hermione Granger and Harry Potter and Tolkien fan (definitely check).

3. Katniss Everdeen

She’s definitely on this list, because of her relationhip with Prim. I read the books for the first time when I was 16, and my little sister was 12, so I could absolutely and complety identify with her when it comes to that. I still do. I would do absolutely everything for my siblings. (Sam) As for Frodo, she would do everything for her brothers as well, so there’s that part. And, for both of us, it’s just who she is. She doesn’t want to be a hero. She doesn’t want the attention, because it’s dangerous, and she cares so much about everyone around her. She’s a little rough around the edges, and she doesn’t always understand the signals she’s getting – both are things that we find in ourselves. And the way she handles the situations she gets into is something that we both identify with, because we’d probably be the same. The fear, the anger, but also the fact that she stills runs into battle, because it’s not just about her – all of that is the way we would probably do it, even though those are situations that we will never find ourselves in.

4. Dean Winchester

Although we are both “Sam-girls”, as they say, and would defend Sam Winchester with our dying breaths, even – or especially – to his brother, being big sisters makes us both identify more with Dean. Maybe that’s why we “prefer” Sam; he’s less like us. We would both move Heaven and Hell for our siblings (I realize that they both do), and we would both protect them, no matter the cost (Sam cares about protecting Dean, of course, but mostly from either Dean himself or Sam. Dean always wanted to protect Sam from the whole world). So, although we love Sam, and relate to him, we both identify with Dean more.

5. Barry Allen

Granted, neither of us can run that fast, but he’s still an incredibly relatable character (kudos to Grant Gustin for making him so relatable and loveable). He gets way too excited over things, like his own ability for example, and he’s kind of a fanboy. He’s awkward, which we defintely are, and he tries his best to do right by everyone (also something we both tend to do. Less Meta-humans involved, though). He believes in the good in everyone without being naive, and I think we are both like that.

  1. Ha, this is great. Especially liked the reasons for identifying with Charlie- she was a much more positive fandom nod than Becky, and so much more than that as a character.

    • I always felt like she was the writers making up for Becky, and I don’t know if that’s why they put so much effort or whatever in her or if they just fell in love as much as the fandom did. She’s just so amazing! And she SO has to come back

      • Yes! Oh lord, Becky. I can’t help giggling when she’s onscreen, while inwardly cringing at the same time… I spent the whole of Season Seven, Time For A Wedding laughing manically and swearing at the screen… such an appalling episode in so many ways and yet I can’t quite hate it. I mean, she knocked Sam out with a waffle iron, for God’s sake.
I suspect we shall see Charlie again- though not alive. I think it was pretty unambiguous on that. But her character felt very organic to me, like she wasn’t intended to mean so much at first and then she grew- like Bobby. And I think as fans we can relate. I mean- ‘I was drunk. It was comic-con.’

      • I think her being such a fangirl herself is why the fans love her so much. And yeah, sure, they burned her body and stuff, but Jim Micheals said at Asylum 14 that they wanted to bring Charlie back – maybe not in the same form (I’m not quite sure what that’s supposed to mean, but I sure hope it doesn’t mean that Felicia won’t be playing her, because Felicia is one of the many reason why Charlie is so awesome!), so fingers crossed… I guess we’ll have to wait and see. And pray to god – err, Chuck – that they don’t kill off Jodi. Or bring back Becky

      • If they kill Jodie I’m dropping bodies. They have no actual reason to- she isn’t even a hunter, she’s a cop who gets occasionally mixed up in hunting- so hopefully the ‘it ends bloody or sad’ thing won’t apply to her.
I seriously doubt they’ll bring back Becky.
Felicia Day not playing Charlie would be like Mark Sheppard not playing Crowley or Misha Collins not playing Cas. They probably meant as a different sort of being.

      • I’m pretty sure that Kim Rhodes will be dropping bodies, too. And every other fan on the planet as well. There’s seriously not enough women on that show! And everyone knows it. So thank god they make them strong and awesome (except for Becky), but still. Yes, please, bring back Charlie. And Felicia.

      • I think in a lot of ways it’s a show about masculinity- not in a bad or a sexist way, but about what it means to be a man, and the expectations that go with that. There is a sparseness of females, but not because they’re weak or incompetent, so overall I don’t really have a problem in that area. As long as they’re as strong and smart as the male characters- which they absolutely are.

      • You are absolutely right, and I’m not really complaining or saying that the show is sexist, cause I don’t think that it is, but there still is a bit of a lack of female characters from time to time. But I love the ones they have so much that it usually makes up for it – until they kill them off

      • Right??? I think literally the only recurring characters not to have died are Amelia, Claire, Lisa and Ben, the Ghostfacers, and Jodie and Donna. For a show that’s been going ten years, that’s an impressive bodycount. Have you seen the finale?

      • I know. I kind of think it’s awesome… and outrageous (but I think SPN is best when outrageous)… and I kind of haven’t processed it yet.
Also kind of hilarious to me, since I’ve been doing a rewatch- on s5 and so far Dean has stated four times ‘you can’t kill Death!’

      • Well that’s Supernatural, isn’t it? Outrageous, and doing stuff they said they wouldn’t do (angels, for example). And hilarious and dramatic of course. That’s why we all love it so much, isn’t it? I mean who would even dare to make Death an actual character! And then kill him?!

        Liked by 1 person

      • I know! Just as you think they literally cannot get crazier, they have the boys discover their own book series… or Sam gets possessed by Lucifer… or The French Mistake (nuff said)… or a fangirl roofies/marries Sam… or they find a MUSICAL ABOUT THEIR LIVES… or they kill Death. Yeah. All in a day’s work.
Lol. Death thought he’d outlive God. Lol lol lol lol.

      • Don’t even get me started on the bodyswaps. Or the ageing and de-aging eps. Or Dog Dean Afternoon. Or the Looney Tunes episode. Or, dear God, the Sampala. The fairies. Frankenstein. Oz. Nazis! Is there any genre they haven’t done?

      • Oh I’m sure they’re gonna find something new. It’s like one of them has a weird dream and the rest just goes “yes! let’s do that!” and it should be ridiculous but it’s awesome?

      • Sam, you just made me snigger.
Personally I’m angling for a Labyrinth-homage episode. With David Bowie singing. And I want the Darkness to be like the patch of darkness in The Voyage Of The Dawn Treader because that scared the living shit out of me.
I’m already a little scared just wondering what the hell they’re going to do next season. There’s an infrastructure to their world that’s steadily growing- there’s hunters, who are kind of seen as the scum of the earth, and then there were once the Men Of Letters, and there’s the Judah Initiaive and the Thule. And the Stynes. It makes you wonder what other people are lurking out there.
I vote for Winnie the Pooh. Make it happen, Kripke.

      • I’m pretty sure we’re all terrified at what they’re gonna do next season. But isn’t that the way it is at the end of every season?
Winnie The Pooh? YES. Also, that’d be an awesome opportunity to bring back the Trickster.
Uuh, or like Toy Story, only the toys are monsters or something. Kinda like what they did with the bipolar alcoholic giganitc teddy bear. Something ridiulous where they end up having to fight something that looks innocent. And then it’s the Trickster. Just bring back Gabriel!

        Liked by 1 person

      • Oh my God, that teddy bear. Just.
        ‘Why am I here!?’
        ‘For tea parties!’
‘Tea parties…! Is that all there IS?’
I suspect we have not seen the last of Gabriel, one way or another. His influence continues to creep in. Mystery Spot is my favourite ep ever (tied with The Man Who Knew Too Much)… so sad and so funny. The hilarious death montage, and then he dies on Wednesday and Sam’s all like ‘I’m supposed to wake up and your heart just breaks for him.
I seriously have tears in my eyes just from typing that. Evidently I have some problems.

        Liked by 1 person

      • Don’t we all? Mystery Spot gets me every time too, just thinking about Sam losing Dean so, so many times. I mean, yeah, sure, it’s not real, but that doesn’t change anything, he still watches his brother die over and over and over again. And then he thinks it’s finally over and it’s not.
That’s one thing I love so much about Supernatural. They have so many incredible episodes, and no matter how many times you watched them, they still make you cry or laugh. Like, my go-to episode when I’m really down is Yellow Fever. It makes me laugh every. damn. time. And I lost count of how many times I’ve watched it. And there’s so many more!

      • Yes! Mine’s probably Bad Day At Black Rock- ‘I lost my shoe’, I mean, come on. And Clap Your Hands If You Believe is another personal favourite- they really tapped into the comedic potential of Soulless Sam there, which I adore.
Another one I find really touching- funny at the same time as absolutely ripping my heart out- is The Great Escapist, near the end of s8, where Sam and Dean go to that hotel to find Metatron and Sam’s ill and babbling about farty donkeys and then there’s the whole heartbreaking ‘I’m not clean’ speech and I am in little bits on the floor.
Also, Free To Be You And Me, because of Cas in that brothel, and that one with Paris Hilton- Fallen Idols?- because I will never be over the fact that they did a WHOLE EPISODE just to take the piss out of JP being in House Of Wax.

      • I don’t think there’s any other show on TV that makes fun of themselves like SPN does. Mystery Spot, Yellow Fever, The French Mistake, Tall Tales (how the hell did Jared even keep a straight face for that ‘too precious for this world’? or his ‘blablablablabla’?!)… I just love that

        Liked by 1 person

      • Yes! Just so silly and so hilarious. They aren’t afraid to take risks- probably why they’re still going. LARP And The Real Girl is hilarious too- I mean, that last scene with Sam and Dean embracing the life?
Also, Hallucifer, who made me laugh while making me terrified for Sam. S7 had its faults but I love that arc.

        Like

      • It’s not my favorite season, but Hallucifer was great – I liked that they didn’t just drop the storyline with Sam being stuck in the cage as Lucifer’s and Michael’s punching bag for about 150 years. Two episodes I somehow always find myself rewatching in season 7 are Plucky Pennywhistle’s Magical Menagerie, sometimes only to watch Sam fight those clowns and then having them explode in front of him and covering him in glitter; and The Born-Again Identity. That’s a very powerful episode in my opinion (for instance, they show how mental illness and sleep deprivation is really not beautiful at all; on TV or in Hollywood, even people with severe sleeping disorders are just shown with faint bags under their eyes for about thirty seconds…)

        Liked by 1 person

      • I know, how much stuff would we have missed if it’d ended at s5? Charlie. Garth. Hallucifer. Soulless Sam. Kevin. Jodie being awesome. Donna. Godstiel. And I love Plucky Pennywhistle etc etc- that’s one of the very few times you see Dean actually laugh! For most of that I was torn between giggling and being horrified at Sam getting beaten up by clowns.
And yeah, I like that they do it properly when they show people with sleep disorders and stuff- have you seen s10? Sam looks absolutely appalling in the first three eps. They don’t just do this ‘don’t I look TERRIBLE’ *wink wink nudge* thing that a lot of other shows do. And when Dean gets really beaten up- in Do You Believe In Miracles and Swan Song- he looks awful too. They have enough confidence in their stars’ acting to be able to mess around with the way they look.

Oh, and empathy on the Sam-girl front, by the way. I felt awful for him at the star of this season.
